About

Celebrate the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines, the United States, and Australia with a special film screening of "First Light." This event is co-presented by the Embassy of Australia and the Embassy of the Philippines.

"First Light," Australia’s official 99th Academy Awards entry, is a powerful examination of faith, community, and corruption within a mountain community. The story centers on Sister Yolanda, a nun admired for her kindness, who begins to question the circumstances of a young man's death. Her gentle investigation leads her to discern the power structures around her, including her beloved Church, ultimately challenging her belief system.

Filipino-Australian director James J. Robinson brings his distinguished photography background to his debut feature, evident in its long takes and painterly style. His patient approach offers dignity to the characters, revealing their complexities through subtle glances and words. The film is 118 minutes long, presented in Tagalog with English subtitles.

Following the screening, there will be a conversation with director James J. Robinson, offering insights into the film's themes and production. The evening concludes with a reception featuring Australian wine and delicious snacks from the Philippines. This event is free to attend.
