Mexican Independence Day is September 16, and the celebration starts the night before. Late on September 15, plazas across Mexico repeat the Grito de Dolores, the 1810 call to arms that opened the war for independence. Washington keeps the same rhythm: the festivities cluster around the 15th and 16th, then spill into the last weekend of the month.
The Mexican Cultural Institute on 16th Street runs the city's most dependable programming for the week, and most of it costs nothing. Fiesta DC closes the month with a parade down Constitution Avenue. Here is the week as we track it at Stamps DC; confirm details with each host before you go.
At the Mexican Cultural Institute
The Institute, in a 1911 mansion at 2829 16th Street NW, anchors the official cultural calendar. On September 13, chef and author Pati Jinich presents Foods of La Frontera, a book talk on the cooking of the borderlands. On the 16th itself, the Institute joins the AFI Latin American Film Festival with a program of Mexican cinema; screening times vary, so check the listing.
Two exhibitions run through the month and make an easy weekday visit: My Conversations with Barragán, Martirene Alcántara's photographic study of the architect Luis Barragán's houses, and the Walsh-García Collection of Mexican art.
El Grito, explained
The Grito is a re-enactment. On the night of September 15, 1810, the priest Miguel Hidalgo rang his church bell in the town of Dolores and called the crowd to rise against colonial rule. Every year since, Mexican officials repeat the shout of patriotic vivas at 11 p.m., ending with three cries of Viva México.
In Washington the embassy's own Grito ceremony is an official function rather than a public party. The public versions of the week are the Institute's programming above and the festivals below, which is the usual shape of national days in this city: the reception is for the diplomatic corps, the celebration is for everyone.
